FAQs

The red Calc-Clean light of my Philips Steam Iron keeps blinking

If your Philips Steam Iron beeps or the red/orange Calc-Clean or Decalc light flashes, find our troubleshooting advice below to solve this.

The red/orange Calc-Clean light is blinking on your Philips Iron

When the Calc-Clean or Decalc light of your Philips Steam Iron is blinking, it is time to descale it.

If the alert remains, this means that the descaling process is not performed properly

My Philips iron sizzles when I place it on its heel

When your Philips iron produces a sizzling noise when you place it on its heel, find out here why this happens.

A sizzling noise is normal

It is normal for your Philips iron to produce a sizzling noise when you place it on its heel. It is the sound of water coming into contact with the soleplate’s steam chamber walls.

Do not worry: the performance of your iron is not affected at all by this.

My Philips Steam Iron is releasing smoke while heating up

If your Philips Steam Iron is producing smoke, there can be several reasons. Please find out how we can help you.

First few times the iron is used

During production, some parts of your Philips Steam Iron have been slightly greased.

As a result of this, your iron may produce some smoke when it is switched on for the first few times.

Do not worry, this is normal.

Water in the soleplate

Sometimes, there might still be some remaining water in your iron’s soleplate after the last usage. This water will evaporate when your iron’s soleplate heats up, and that might look like smoke.

This is normal and will stop after a short while.

My Philips Steam Iron does not heat up anymore

If your Philips Steam Iron stopped heating up, there can be several reasons. Please find out here how we can help you.

Auto Shut-off mode

When your iron has not been used for 5 to 10 minutes, it enters in auto shut-off mode. To use it again, please press the on/off button.

The heating up light is flashing in your Philips Steam Iron:

If your steam iron is left unused horizontally for more than 30 seconds, or vertically (heel rest) for more than 8 minutes, it switches off automatically for safety reasons.

When this happens, the heating up light flashes. Move the iron to turn it on and it will start heating.

The temperature is not set correctly (If applicable to your product)

Please make sure to set the temperature to.the desired setting based on the ironable fabric you have.

After 2 to 3 minutes, the soleplate should be hot.

If wrinkles are not easy to remove, the garment may not be moist enough. Wet the garment slightly and adjust the temperature dial up to a hotter position.

There is a connection problem

Please check the mains cord, the plug and the wall socket. Make sure everything is properly connected.

The iron does not switch on anymore

If this is the case, there might be an internal electric problem with your iron.

My Philips Steam Iron does not remove creases

If your Philips Steam Iron is not removing wrinkles either horizontally or vertically, find out how to solve this in the following lines.

The temperature is set too low

For irons with a temperature dial, please set the temperature according to the fabric that you are ironing. You can use the following table as a reference.

Note: For some fabrics such as silk, wool, cotton and linen, steam would be needed to remove creases more efficiently.

Steam is not used

For steam irons: You can get more steam by using a shot of steam (a boost of steam) to help remove tough wrinkles. Press the steam boost trigger of your iron to increase the steam rate.

Incorrect vertical ironing

When you are ironing vertically, press the iron against the garment, ensure the soleplate is in direct contact with the garment and pull the sides of the garment with your other hand to stretch it to achieve optimal ironing results

My Philips Steam Iron does not produce steam

If your Philips Steam Iron stopped producing steam, please read our troubleshooting advice below to solve this.

There is no water in the water tank

If there is no water in the water tank of your Philips Steam Iron, your iron is not able to generate steam. Please refill the water tank with water. After this, your iron should work again.

The iron is not ready to steam

In this case, wait until the orange ‘temperature indicator’ light switches off, then your iron is ready to produce steam.

Note: For the irons with OptimalTemp, the iron ready light will stay on when the iron is ready to produce steam.

The steam setting is set to “steam off”

If you have a Philips Steam Iron with a temperature dial, always make sure that the temperature dial is at the 2-dot, 3-dot or the LINEN position. Your Philips Iron does not produce steam when the temperature dial is at the 1-dot position, the SYNTH setting or in Calc-Clean. Tilt your iron up and select the steam setting with the steam slider on top of the handle.

What type of water can I use in my Philips Steam Iron?

Using the right type of water helps prolong your Philips garment steamer or steam iron's lifespan. Please read along to find some tips and tricks.

Water type to use

Your Philips steam iron or garment steamer has been designed to be used with soft water. However, if you live in an area with hard water, fast scale build-up may occur.

Therefore, to prolong the lifespan of your iron or steamer it is recommended to use distilled or RO water.

Please do not use perfumed water, water from the tumble dryer, vinegar, starch, descaling agents, ironing aids, chemically descaled water or other chemicals as they may cause water spitting, brown staining or damage to your steam iron or garment steamer.

To perfume your clothes we recommend you choosing one of the following options:

Using perfumed washing softener

Using essential oils (aromas) during washing

Spraying perfumed water after ironing or steaming
